Credit Unions?

Okay, I've never understood credit unions. Can you just sign up with one? Or do you have to be employed with a certain company?

  1. Most of the time you have to fit a certain criteria like go to their church or have a family member work for them at some point, but others are open to the general populous. They offer much better interest rates, so I would check with your local credit unions to see if you qualify to join one since they aren't federally regulated... they have their own credit union alliance.
  2. It depends on the credit union. I belong to one that was for people who lived in my town could join, and another one that was for employees of my place of work.
  3. Depends on the rules of the credit union. Usually by the name you can guess. For example, my dad is a member of the Xerox Federal Credit Union. He is a Xerox employee, but his immediate family members are also eligible to join. I'm a member of the JSC Federal Credit Union. All NASA employees (civil servants) of Johnson Space Center and their contractors (United Space Alliance, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc.) along with family are eligible to be members. Trade unions have credit unions, even towns and counties have credit unions. You would have to look at the listings in your own area for which credit unions you could join.
