Why have credit unions grown in popularity over the years?

I have an assignment and the question is: Credit unions have grown in popularity over the years. Why do you think so? So how about you help answering the question for me. Thanks in advance. Please provide some resources.

1. Credit Unions are member owned, and they don't charge outrageous fees like banks do.
2. Very simple, they give better service than banks, they are owned by their members, they pay higher savings rates than banks and have lower interest rates on credit cards and loans as opposed to banks. They offered same services as banks.
